Description:

The APTA CSM Steering Group considers high-level recommendations for the enhancement of APTA CSM and oversees the ongoing development of the APTA CSM Multiyear Plan, which is approved annually by the Council of Section Presidents and the APTA Board of Directors.

The Steering Group also leads review of the five-year APTA CSM agreement two years prior to its expiration to propose potential amendments.

APTA CSM Steering Group members are expected put the interests of APTA CSM above those of the constituency they represent.

The APTA CSM Steering Group should analyze data from past conferences and projections for future conferences, and it should solicit input from relevant experts as necessary.

Requirements:
Be a section/academy member in good standing of:
    • At least one small section/academy to be a small section representative, at least one medium section to be a medium section/academy representative, and at least one large section/academy to be a large section representative.
    •  Any of the sections to be an at-large representative.
  • Not be serving as a section/academy program chair, co-chair, or incoming chair.
  • Have the ability to balance the interests of all APTA CSM stakeholders.

  • Applicants may belong to any section/academy.

As part of the process to establish staggered terms, individuals serving an initial one-year term (i.e., the large section/academy representative) remain eligible for two subsequent consecutive three-year terms.

The following knowledge/skills/experience may be useful to inform selection and appointment of APTA CSM Steering Group representatives:

  • Meeting planning experience

  • Representation of the breadth of the APTA CSM stakeholders

  • Visionary perspective or management expertise
  • Experience in physical therapy leadership at the state or national level

Specific Responsibilities of the APTA CSM Steering Group:

Meet four times per year (tentative timeframes):

    • APTA CSM: The APTA CSM Steering Group observes the on-site debrief of APTA CSM program and research chairs to hear their perspectives and holds an onboarding meeting for new Steering Group members. A chair is selected among the five section/academy appointees.
    • March: The APTA CSM Steering Group meets virtually to review the previous conference and consider adjustments to the APTA CSM Multiyear Plan.
    • April/May: The APTA CSM Steering Group participates in an annual virtual meeting of APTA CSM Stakeholders.
    • June: The APTA CSM Steering Group meets virtually to finalize proposed updates to the APTA CSM Multiyear Plan, which are subsequently approved by the Council of Section Presidents and then the APTA Board of Directors.
    • Prepare for and participate in all meetings of the APTA CSM Steering Group, as well as carrying out accepted responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • Conduct a self-assessment of Steering Group’s functions and performance annually, as well as making recommendations to the Council of Section Presidents (prior to selection of new appointees that year) as to skills/knowledge/experience that might enhance the group’s effectiveness.

 Composition:

  • The eight members of the APTA CSM Steering Group shall include:
    • Five section/academy appointees, as listed at the top of this page.
    • Two members of APTA staff.
    • One liaison from the APTA Board of Directors.
  • A Steering Group Chair is selected annually at the APTA CSM meeting of APTA CSM Steering Group from among the five section/academy representatives. The chair serves a one-year term.

Terms:

Members shall serve three-year staggered terms that begin each January, with the first meeting occurring at APTA CSM. No member, other than APTA staff participants, may serve more than two consecutive three-year terms.*

The three Steering Group members appointed by small, medium, and large section/academy Presidents will continue to serve their current term regardless of changes in section/academy membership size category during that term.

*As part of the process to establish staggered terms, individuals serving an initial one-year term remain eligible for two subsequent consecutive three-year terms.

Funding:

  • Members of the APTA CSM Steering Group will receive complementary registration to APTA CSM. Additional expenses related to travel, housing, and per diem are covered by the individual.
  • Any other expenses of the APTA CSM Steering Group must be approved in advance through APTA’s annual budget process and will be billed as shared APTA CSM expenses per the APTA CSM Agreement.
