Description:

Rehabilitation following limb loss, as well as prosthetics, are noted content areas in the Normative Model of Physical Therapist Professional Education and the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education’s (CAPTE) Evaluative Criteria, however there are currently no accepted standard of guidelines for the breadth and depth of this content. As such, the Amputee Rehabilitation Focus Group of the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy is looking to create a Task Force (made up of individuals representing practice, academic, and advocacy arenas) to develop a limb loss/limb difference/prosthetics (LL/LD/P) entry-level competencies for doctor of physical therapy academic and clinical educators. The shared goals of these entities is that all professional education programs provide appropriate LL/LD/P education based on sound evidence, current and future practice models are marked by successful integration of interprofessional collaboration with informed and understood patient values and preferences, and that the APTA Positions and Guidelines appropriately reflect projected future practice as described by the APTA Vision Statement and societal needs. Objectives: A. Introduce the need for education/curricular guidelines B. Positions and Practice Standards Related to LL/LD/P Rehabilitation C. Legislative and Regulatory Background D. Entry-level competencies to provide to PT Educators with curricular guidelines which can be used for developing and teaching limb loss, limb difference, and prosthetic (LL/LD/P) content in professional physical therapist programs E. Foundational Basis for LL/LD/P rehabilitation in Physical Therapy Education F. Curriculum Resource Examples a. Classroom and clinical physical therapist laboratory education i. Theory and principles ii. Didactic instruction iii. Faculty resources iv. Prosthetic Fundamentals v. Prosthetic teaching models vi. Expected learning outcomes b. Clinical internships considerations TASK: The purpose of these entry-level competencies is to provide PT Educators with curricular guidelines responsible for developing and teaching limb loss, limb difference, and prosthetic (LL/LD/P) content in professional physical therapist programs. Primary content and behavioral objectives examples will be provided, along with examples of learning objectives for the classroom. Additionally, examples of learning objectives for the clinic may serve as a helpful reference for clinical faculty in planning hands-on LL/LD/P learning experiences for students, regardless of practice setting. Our goal would be to have the resulting core competencies available to faculty members and clinical educators, regardless of their APTA or AACPT membership status. GOAL: The goal is to have a completed competency document to present to the AACPT Board of Directors for approval in 6-12 months.
