The mission of the IPTA DEI Committee is to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging within the physical therapy profession to mirror the communities we serve.
For the purpose of this committee, we consider underrepresented groups to include:
- Racial, ethnic and cultural minorities
- Sexual orientation and gender identity minorities
- Nationality and immigrant status minorities
- Individuals living with disabilities
Objectives:
- Increase diversity within IPTA membership, leadership, and the profession with inclusion of underrepresented groups.
- Work to address barriers that impact entry into the profession and affect equity within the profession.
- Promote personal, professional, and societal accountability in the fair and equitable treatment of all individuals.
Action Plan:
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of PTs, PTAs, SPTs, and SPTAs of all underrepresented groups to be IPTA members by:
- Collaborating with iMAP to diversify the mentor pool.
- Creating resources for foreign trained therapist coming to Illinois to practice.
- Assisting the Nominating Committees in recruiting members of underrepresented groups for leadership roles within the Chapter.
- Increase awareness of physical therapy as a profession for IL citizens in economic and educationally disadvantaged parts of our state and those of minority backgrounds as a choice for care by:
- Providing presentations to middle school and high school students in schools serving diverse and/or economically disadvantaged populations.
- Promote providing pro bono PT support for recreational sports programs in economically challenged parts of our state.
- Create and share a resource list of books, articles, podcasts, and documentaries that individuals can use to:
- Facilitate access to DEI materials and empower all community members to improve their cultural responsiveness.
- Create educational opportunities for the PT community on determinants of health/health injustices and how to combat them.
- Contribute to discussions on state health care license renewal requirements mandating cultural competence education (similar to ethics and sexual harassment prevention).
