As a part of APTA NC’s commitment to diversity, APTA NC is collaborating with NC AHEC’s Health Careers and Diversity Workforce programs. Each APTA NC district will have a liaison who will serve as a point of contact for NC AHECs’ Health Careers and Diversity Workforce Liaisons. Each of the nine AHECs, the Duke AHEC Program, and the NC AHEC Program Office at UNC Chapel Hill has a Health Careers and Workforce Diversity Liaison who initiates the development of student programs and activities that meet the needs of their region. NC AHEC liaisons will communicate with APTA NC’s Health Careers Liaisons regarding APTA NC’s participation in various programming and activities that have the potential to increase underrepresented minority students’ exposure to the field of physical therapy. The opportunities may include, but are not limited to, speaking engagements, career fairs, job shadowing, etc. The APTA NC Health Careers Liaison would be responsible for helping improve physical therapy representation in NC AHEC’s programming by recruiting volunteers for different events. If desired, the liaison may also serve as a volunteer speaker/presenter at NC AHEC events, but this is not required. This collaboration between APTA NC and NC AHEC has the potential to help push the needle forward in improving diversity within the field of physical therapy.
