Research Title
Interdisciplinary Management of Adolescent Concussion and Return to Play: A survey of Healthcare Professionals

Brief Summary of Research
The Study:
The primary aim of this study is to describe interdisciplinary coordination during management and return to play of adolescent athletes with concussion. We will be exploring the confidence that health care providers from various disciplines have in implementing return to play protocols, as well as health care providers’ understanding of other disciplines involved in concussion management. We hope to include physicians, physician assistants, nurses, athletic trainers, and physical therapists in our study.
Need for the study:
Previous studies that survey primary care physicians, athletic trainers, and emergency room physicians have caveats in implementation of return to play protocols. Limitations in knowledge and communication within the interdisciplinary team poses barriers to treatment and may put athletes at risk for further brain damage. Since adolescent athletes are at an increased risk for subsequent injury following concussion due to longer recovery times and developmental changes, it is especially important that health care providers have a thorough understanding of other disciplines involved in caring for adolescents with concussion.
The Survey:
This study consists of a short, validated electronic survey with questions regarding the scope of practice, referral patterns within the interdisciplinary team and the level of confidence that clinicians have with executing the return to play process. These surveys will be anonymous and securely stored in a password protected computer that only the researchers can access. Findings of this study will be disseminated via presentations at professional conferences and publication in a peer-reviewed journal
