The APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors is seeking student members to apply for our NEW DEI Project Committee. We are looking to appoint a Chair, Chair-Elect, and 6 project committee members. We aim to appoint a committee that is diverse in as many areas as possible, such as age, race, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, geography, DPT/PTA institution type, and socioeconomic status.
Purpose: to align the work of the Student Assembly with APTA’s mission to build a diverse and inclusive community that advances the profession of physical therapy to improve the health of society.
Goal: to foster DEI toward develop an evolving, culturally diverse society and facilitate a pathway for lifelong learning that encompasses students, clinicians, and patients.
Possible projects for this project committee could include:
- Planning quarterly town halls.
- Creating a toolkit to empower students to present about DEI.
- Developing unique concepts to keep DEI conversations ongoing, like Morning Coffee Talks or Open Door discussions.
- Highlighting evidence-based researched that is authored by minorities.
- Gathering a network of multi-language speaking students/clinicians (i.e. one for ASL, Spanish, Chinese, etc.) for students to reach out to
- Encouraging DPT and PTA programs to incorporate active DEI training into their curriculum or incorporate DEI topics/scenarios into case studies, lectures, etc.
- Collaborating with APTA's DEI Committee.
- Collaborating with Ujima Institute, NABPT, and/or AAPT.
Est. Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per week.
