Description:

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Committee on Evidence-Based Quality and Value
(EBQV) spearheads initiatives to promote, educate and develop Evidence Based Medicine products such as
Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC). The AAOS will soon begin the next Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC)
for the Management of Hip Fractures in Older Adults. As participants on the clinical practice
guideline (CPG), APTA is invited to nominate 1 representative to participate on each of the writing
and voting panels (2 nominees in total) during the development of this Appropriate Use Criteria.

The writing panel, based on the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method, will be responsible for
constructing a comprehensive patient indications list and a treatment list for patients with hip
fractures. Writing Panel members have no financial conflict of interest restrictions. The writing
panel is a group of six to twelve clinicians who are considered experts in the selected topic. The
ideal writing panel member should have experience in treating patients with hip fractures, and will
be required to construct and review materials, correspond with AAOS staff electronically, and
participate in approximately 5-10 conference calls spanning one to three months in order to produce
the AUC materials. As this panel will not meet in-person, there are no associated costs for
participating society representatives.

Voting panel nominees must be free of relevant financial conflicts and will be required to complete
the AAOS Conflict of Interest disclosure form online before participating. Additionally, they must
participate in one 45-60- minute introductory webinar and use an electronic ballot to independently
rate the appropriateness of various treatments for multiple patient scenarios (deadline for
completion is approximately 1 month after the introductory call). Lastly, all voting panel members
must attend a teleconference to discuss the first-round ratings with their fellow voting panel
members and complete a second round of voting, as necessary. Once the writing
and voting panels have been constructed, we will poll the panel members to schedule the
teleconferences.

Please specify preference - either Writing panel or Voting Panel.
